How we work together

Working with Bump.

Everything you need to know before we start: who we work with, what we promise, what we expect in return, and exactly how we price our work.

Who we work with

Senior leaders only.

Bump works directly with senior leaders at companies, trade associations, and NGOs who are shaping policy or need to be part of that conversation.

While we encourage all seniorities to be involved on the client side, we require a constant senior presence to avoid excessive rounds of review and any confusion over budgets.

We do sometimes collaborate with other agencies, but only in service of a joint client, and always alongside a single senior point of contact. Agencies themselves are not our clients.

Clients who thrive with us tend to have

A desire for true partnership. You're looking for an equal partner to solve a problem from the first acknowledgement of it, not a vendor to execute a brief.

Sophistication. You value expert counsel as much as tactical execution, and you know the difference.

Confidence and curiosity. You trust your own judgement, and you're still curious enough to want other perspectives on it.

A bias to action. You know that doing nothing, or delaying indefinitely, isn't an option.

What Bump promises you

The Bump promise

We don't take relationships for granted. Every member of the Bump team has been selected on the basis of their ability to deliver on what we call the Bump promise. If you're a Bump client, the people leading your work:

Are empathetic allies who take time to truly understand you and your organisation.

Recognise not just your public affairs and policy communications goals, but also what success means for you, your boss, your peers, your loved ones and your legacy.

Make you laugh, inspire you, and challenge you to see potential in ideas you might have dismissed.

Create space for you to be at your best.

Have fought for sophistication, quality and creativity in public affairs and policy communications, and won. And are ready to help you do the same.

Generate a thousand ideas per minute, all of which feel doable and strategically sound.

Can diagnose a communications problem instantly and can present several options to solve it.

Show up to every interaction with you with the aim of making it the most enjoyable professional interaction you have that day.

What we expect from clients to ensure success

A two-way relationship

A successful partnership relies on shared values and mutual commitment. To get the most out of working with Bump, we ask that our clients:

01

Identify a single senior leader to act as our client. While we welcome working with broader teams, having the same senior person consistently present is essential to our ability to deliver value.

02

Embrace equal partnership. We succeed together, and if we pivot together to navigate obstacles, we can never fail.

03

Stay positive. There is much negativity in professional life that we cannot control. But in this relationship, we can control it and will check negativity at the door.

04

Trust us and each other. Every great relationship is built on trust, and we work every day to earn it.

05

Maintain a bias towards action. There is always something we can do to get started, to give something a push. Always join us in asking "What is the easiest, quickest thing we can do tomorrow that will bring us closer to our goal?"

06

Use the language of solutions, not roadblocks. Instead of pointing out what won't work or why something is unconvincing, steer discussions toward what could work or what would make an idea stronger. This shifts energy toward progress rather than obstacles.

Why we're open about this

Money talk shouldn't be awkward.

We want our client relationships to be creative, fun, transparent, and financially realistic, all at once. That means balancing our need to run a healthy business with our commitment to great work and real relationships, and it starts with being upfront about what things cost.

Not every engagement fits neatly into a bracket, and the numbers above move with scope and ambition. But this is the honest starting point, so a conversation about money is never the awkward part.

Questions we hear often

Does Bump pitch?

No. If you want to explore ideas together, that happens through a paid Idea Sprint.

Reasons we don't pitch: experience shows it doesn't lead to the best possible creative work, and isn't the basis for healthy, long-term relationships. From a business point of view, unpaid competitive processes bring a cost that must be borne by paying clients.

How can we get to know Bump without paying for anything?

Just met us and not convinced yet? That's normal. Our longest-standing, most satisfied clients spent at least 12 months getting to know us before they gave us a single cent, by following the team on LinkedIn, joining free in-person or LinkedIn Live events, meeting up for coffee or lunch, and committing, as we do, to the advancement of the policy communications community.

From experience, it takes at least six touchpoints across at least 12 months for clients to know we're the right fit, at least one of them in person. When you're ready to go further, we'd usually suggest starting with a small paid collaboration first, to build trust on both sides.
